If you wish to write for the official military records of your
subject, you can request the information under the Freedom of
Information Act (you MUST mention
this Act or they will simply ignore your request).

use plain paper, providing the same information.

For those that
are interested in the infamous "fire" that burned
up records (a common claim" see the official information
about that fire at http://www.archives.gov/facilities/mo/st_louis/military_personnel_records/fire_1973.html
You should have the person's FULL name and Social Security
Number. Lacking that, it is still possible to get the information,
but you must have their dates of service and unit.
